Sierra Club Hawai`i Endorses Maile for 2012 Elections

Date: Monday, June 18, 2012, 6:35 PM

Dear Senator Shimabukuro,

Congratulations! The Sierra Club, Hawai`i Chapter is pleased to endorse you in your upcoming race for Senate District 21. Both our local group and statewide Political Committees reviewed your record, and selected you as the candidate who we believe will best represent the Sierra Club’s interest in a sustainable, healthy Hawai`i at the State Legislature.

We will be publicly releasing a list of our statewide endorsements on Wednesday, June 20th. You are encouraged to announce your endorsement to your friends and supporters on that day.

What does the Sierra Club endorsement afford you? Besides working with the media to publicize our endorsements, we will notify our nearly 12,000 statewide members and supporters of our preferred candidates via our Chapter newsletter, the Malama, coming out in the next week. We will also be posting our endorsements on our website. As an endorsed candidate, you may use the Sierra Club, Hawai`i Chapter name in your lists of campaign supporters, but any other use of the Sierra Club’s name or logo must first be approved by the Group Political Chair (listed below). You may also use our membership list for a campaign mailer for a small fee ($75 per 1000 names). While we are prohibited from using Sierra Club resources to support campaigns, we have an extensive volunteer network to assist endorsed candidates’ campaigns. We have also established a Sierra Club Political Action Committee—which is funded by Club members only—to fund small campaign efforts in targeted races. Please contact the appropriate Group Political Chair below if you have such a project.

The Sierra Club endorses candidates for a variety of reasons dependent on the circumstances of the particular race. An endorsed candidate may have a solid record in elected office of advocacy for Hawaii’s environment, or an endorsed candidate may be a promising challenger in a race where the incumbent has been less than helpful on environmental matters. Either way, the Sierra Club is putting faith in you to help sustain Hawaii’s beautiful environment for generations to come.

Best of luck on your campaign,
Robert D. Harris, Esq.
